Plastic Injection Molding Materials

The different types of plastic utilized in custom injection molding have varying melting temperatures to cater to the needs of specific applications.

  • Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS): It is known for its high impact resistance, toughness, and rigidity, making it a popular choice for applications that require durable and strong plastic parts. ABS is also resistant to chemicals and has a relatively low cost compared to other engineering plastics, making it a good choice for applications that require both affordability and durability. However, ABS has a relatively low heat resistance and can become brittle at low temperatures.

  • Low-Density (LDPE): Characterized by its high flexibility and impact resistance, making it a good choice for applications that require a flexible and durable plastic material. It is also resistant to chemicals and has a low cost, making it a popular choice for packaging and consumer goods. However, LDPE has a lower melting temperature and tensile strength compared to other types of polyethylene.

  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): Known for its high strength and stiffness, making it a popular choice for applications that require a strong and rigid plastic material. HDPE also has a higher melting temperature compared to LDPE, making it more heat resistant. It is also resistant to chemicals and has a low cost, making it a popular choice for packaging and consumer goods. However, HDPE is less flexible than LDPE, making it less suitable for applications that require flexibility.

  • Polycarbonate (PC): It is known for its high transparency, impact resistance, and toughness, making it a popular choice for applications that require a durable and clear plastic material. PC has a high heat resistance and can withstand high temperatures, making it a good choice for applications that require a material that can maintain its physical properties in high-heat environments Polycarbonate also has good electrical insulation properties and is UV resistant, making it a popular choice for applications that require these properties, such as electronic components, optical media, and safety equipment. However, polycarbonate can be brittle at low temperatures and is relatively expensive compared to other thermoplastics.

  • Polyamide (Nylon): Nylon is known for its high strength, toughness, and abrasion resistance, making it a popular choice for applications that require a durable and strong plastic material. Nylon has a high melting temperature and is heat resistant, making it a good choice for applications that require a material that can maintain its physical properties in high-heat environments. Nylon also has good electrical insulation properties, making it a popular choice for applications that require electrical insulation, such as electronic components and electrical fittings. Additionally, nylon has good wear resistance and is resistant to chemicals, making it a popular choice for gears, bearings, and other moving parts in machinery. However, nylon can be brittle at low temperatures and is relatively expensive compared to other thermoplastics.

  • High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS): is a thermoplastic polymer commonly used in the production of plastic products through injection molding. It is made by blending polystyrene with a rubber-like polymer, resulting in a material that has improved impact resistance compared to regular polystyrene. HIPS is known for its good toughness and is a popular choice for applications that require a durable and lightweight plastic material. HIPS is also relatively inexpensive and is easy to process, making it a popular choice for consumer goods and packaging applications. It is also readily available and is widely used in a variety of applications due to its low cost, good impact resistance, and ease of processing. However, HIPS has a relatively low heat resistance and can become brittle at low temperatures.

  • Polypropylene (PP): It is known for its high strength, stiffness, and chemical resistance, making it a popular choice for applications that require a strong and durable plastic material. PP has a high melting temperature and is heat resistant, making it a good choice for applications that require a material that can maintain its physical properties in high-heat environments. Polypropylene is also relatively inexpensive and is easy to process, making it a popular choice for consumer goods and packaging applications. It has a good chemical resistance and is resistant to most acids and bases, making it a popular choice for applications that require chemical resistance, such as containers and piping. Additionally, polypropylene has a low moisture absorption rate and is resistant to moisture, making it a good choice for applications that require a material that is not easily affected by moisture, such as food packaging.
